Abstract: The term ‘decolonial’ entered French academic and activist vocabulary about fifteen years ago, without however being associated with the theory of the same name in Latin America/Abya Yala. This conference takes this observation as its starting point to present the genealogy of Latin American feminist movements and the specificity of decolonial feminism within this broad political current. It explains certain concepts of decolonial theory such as ‘Abya Yala’, ‘coloniality of power’ and ‘coloniality of gender’, among others. A central place is given to thinkers of this school of thought who are less well known and visible than those from the Global North, such as María Lugones, Yuderkys Espinosa Miñoso and Ochy Curiel. Finally, I will discuss the circulation of knowledge and decolonial feminist praxis outside Latin America, particularly in Europe.
Lissell Quiroz has a PhD in history, is a professor of Latin American studies at CY Cergy Paris University, and is a member of the AGORA laboratory and the Institut Universitaire de France (class of 2023-2028). Her research focuses on the history of women, feminism and health in the Americas between the 19th and 20th centuries. Her latest book is entitled Pensées décoloniales. Une introduction aux théories critiques d'Amérique latine (Decolonial Thoughts: An Introduction to Critical Theories in Latin America) (La Découverte, 2023). She is also co-creator of the podcast N'Autre Histoire, which addresses historical events from a decolonial perspective.
